Where the water comes from
The Köprüçay begins in the Taurus, north of the coastal plain, in country made of limestone. Limestone does not shed rain the way clay or granite does; it swallows it. Rain and melting snow disappear into fissures, travel a long way underground, and come back out lower down at springs. That is why a river here keeps running through a rainless summer while the gullies beside it have gone to dry stones.
It also explains the temperature. Water that has travelled a long way inside cold rock arrives cold and stays cold a long way downstream, which anyone who has waded into the Köprüçay at the height of summer can confirm without being told. The plain gets its heat from the sea and its water from the mountains, and the two meet at the river.
The canyon, where the river is at its narrowest
Upstream of the plain the Köprüçay has spent a very long time cutting downwards rather than sideways. The result is Köprülü Kanyon, the gorge that gives the national park around it its name: close walls, deep green water, and the whole flow squeezed into a channel a fraction of the width it will have later.
This is the stretch the rafting boats use, and it is genuinely a different river from the one on the plain — fast because it is compressed, cold because of where it came from, shaded for much of the day by its own rock. The two bridges that named it
Köprüçay is a flat description rather than a poetic name: köprü is bridge, çay is a river of modest size. The name belongs to the crossings, not to the water. High in the gorge a single stone arch springs from one wall to the other above the narrows — Roman work, kept standing and kept in repair for a very long time by everyone who needed to get across it.
Down on the plain, nearer Aspendos, there is a second and longer bridge, and it is the more interesting of the two because it is visibly crooked. Its lower structure is Roman; the deck above it was rebuilt in the Seljuk period. The usual explanation for the kink is that the older piers were no longer standing in a straight line by then, and the later builders used them anyway instead of starting again. A bridge with a bend in it is a written record of a river that moves.
Out on the Aspendos plain, where the river unloads
A river carries as much as its gradient allows. Where the Köprüçay leaves the hills for the plain that gradient collapses, and it puts down what it has been carrying, heaviest first. That is why the bed here is a wide field of pale gravel, far broader than the water in it for most of the year, with sand and finer silt towards the edges.
Rivers that behave this way do not keep one channel. Between floods the water threads its way between gravel bars; the next flood rearranges them, so an island appears where a channel was and a channel opens where an island stood. Nothing about the layout is permanent, which is a strange thing to stand in the middle of and a useful thing to understand before you ride across it.
Ancient Aspendos stood above this lower course and lived off it. The city could be reached from the sea by boat up the Eurymedon, and that only works on a river with a wide, slow lower reach. The Greek name was a familiar one — the battle at the Eurymedon in the fifth century BC is one of the set pieces of Athenian history — and it was the water that made the place rich, not the theatre that outlived it.
Why the ground beside it is so mixed
Everything the safari crosses is the river's own material, sorted by weight and re-sorted by every flood since. Coarse gravel where the water ran fast, packed sand where it slowed, fine silt at the outer edges where it barely moved at all. Those three surfaces behave completely differently under a wheel, and they lie a few metres apart.
The plants follow the same logic. Close to the channel nothing tall survives the floods, so the growth is low, tough and used to being flattened and coming back. Beyond the reach of an ordinary flood the ground is stable enough for pine and for farmland. That boundary is why a track here goes from open riverbed to forest shade and back again over a short distance rather than over a long one.
The safari runs in the Aspendos area, on the natural land around the Köprüçay, over a mixture of riverside terrain, forest tracks and off-road trails. - Gravel, sand and silt sit within a few metres of one another, because the river sorted them that way.
- Dust and mud are the same material in two states; which one you meet is decided by the weather that has been over the mountains, not by us.
- Shallow crossings come where the channel spreads thin, and there is more water in them on some days than on others. Where there is water, you ride through it rather than over it.
- Trees stand where floods cannot reach, which is why riverbed and forest alternate so quickly.
The river you get is the river of that day
Rain in the mountains does not reach the plain when it falls. Some of it arrives overland and some through the rock, so the state of the ground on any given morning is the sum of the weather that has passed over a large area rather than of the sky above your hotel. A dry spell means shallow crossings and a fine dust that hangs in the air. After rain the river carries more and the silt turns to mud.
That is why every page here says mud depends on conditions instead of promising it. After rain there is plenty of it; in a dry spell there is dust instead, and nobody can turn one into the other. What happens to a booking when the forecast changes is covered in the weather guide.
Reaching the river from the coast
The Köprüçay meets the sea between the resorts on this stretch of coast, which is why most people cross it without registering it at all: a wide pale bed under a road bridge somewhere on the way to Side. Guests are collected at their hotels along that coast and taken inland, upstream of the crossing they have probably already driven over.
